Stop Comparing Yourself – Word of the Week

Edition #36

Week 36

2 Corinthians 10:12
“For we dare not class ourselves or compare ourselves with those who commend themselves. But they, measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.”

Comparison is destructive.

Have you been around someone who starts talking about how great they are—who they know, what they’ve accomplished or what position they’ve attained? The more they talk, the worse you feel…if you start comparing yourself to them. This is why today’s verse says not to compare yourself with those who commend themselves.

Next it says not to measure yourself by yourself because it’s unwise. Now, at first when I read this, I thought, “Aren’t we supposed to look at our past achievements to try to beat our personal bests?” Although there’s a time for this, it’s not helpful when it comes to measuring your worth. You see, you can’t measure your value based on what you’ve done. You’ll never realise how amazing you are by looking at your performance. The only way to measure your worth is by going to God, your Father and Creator.

It’s time we as Christians stopped measuring ourselves according to how we think we need to measure up and started measuring ourselves according to what God’s Word says.

For example, the Bible says that God thinks about you all the time (Psalm 139:15). If you were to pray right now and say, “Hey God, it’s me,” you could imagine God saying back, “Hi! I was just thinking about you!” Isn’t that incredible?

Your worth is not measured in deeds or accomplishments. It’s measured by the fact that God says you’re of infinite worth to him!
